To gain a place on this MA Fashion Design degree, you’ll have to submit a personal statement and meet our entry requirements when you apply. Within your MA Fashion Design personal statement (up to 500 words), we’ll want to understand: What motivates you and what current experiences do you have in fashion design? How have you been involved and what did you do? What designers, makers and artists inspire you? Why do you want to work in the fashion sector? Why is the University of Salford and this Fashion Design masters the right choice for your future goals? Portfolio requirement: As part of the application process for MA Fashion Design you will be expected to submit a portfolio of work that demonstrates your creative and practical design skills. Please ensure your work is well scanned and presented: Ensure your portfolio is submitted as a PDF attachment and not as an online link. PDF file size of complete portfolio should be no more than 25mb (please make sure resolution of all pages and images are 72dpi to ensure work can be seen clearly) Elements to include within your portfolio: Prepare a digital portfolio of design work up to 30 pages approx. (no less than 28 pages) Within the portfolio you can include a range of work including sketches, design development work, mood boards, concept ideas, illustrations, technical drawings, and any photography of products or garments that you have made. Also, any other creative work that demonstrates your skills within art, design and digital media. Ensure that at least one project is complete, demonstrating your whole design process from concept to research development and experimentations, design sketches, illustrated final line of collection or outfit and photography of garment made. Ensure work is presented in the order of projects, ideally with the most recent project/work first. Select and curate as part of your portfolio your very best work and garment samples. Some applicants may be invited to interview. Once we have received your application we will advise of the next steps. An undergraduate degree, normally at 2:2 or above, and supporting portfolio of practice. If you are an international student and not from a majority English speaking country, you will need IELTS 6.0 with no element below 5.5. We accept qualifications from all around the world. Find your country to see a full list of entry requirements. We also accept a range of other English language qualifications . If you do not have the English language requirements, you could take our Pre-Sessional English course . We welcome applications from students who may not have formal/traditional entry criteria but who have relevant experience or the ability to pursue the course successfully. The Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) process could help you to make your work and life experience count. The APL process can be used for entry onto courses or to give you exemptions from parts of your course. Two forms of APL may be used for entry: the Accreditation of Prior Certificated Learning (APCL) or the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL).

STRUCTURE Your personal statement should be logically ordered and interesting, it must show why you are interested in this line of study and must demonstrate your ability to take the qualification. A possible structure that you could use is as follows: Current Studies • Degree - how your studies relate to your postgraduate application.This is particularly important if you are applying for study or research that does not seem to obviously follow on from your present course • Subject areas - mention those related to the postgraduate course that show a relevant base of knowledge • Technical skills that you have developed that may relate to your future studies • Related projects that you may have worked on, including group projects, labs and individual projects • Evidence of managing your project - research skills, the application of experimental methodology etc Why this Master’s/PhD? • Show your motivations - what particularly appeals to you about the course or research topic? • Link your plans for future study with your career aspirations • Demonstrate that you are making an informed decision by referring to research that you have done into the course, studies or research area. It is essential to show that you are genuinely motivated to follow this route and have thoroughly thought it through, in order to show that you will not drop out when the going gets tough Past Work Experience • An opportunity to demonstrate that you are able to adapt and ‘fit in’ to a range of environments and experiences • Mention how you were successful, and any achievements that demonstrate your ability to work effectively • Cite relevant skills that may relate to the course or your career aspirations, and achievements, perhaps in challenging situations • If the experience is not directly related to your application then think about showing the transferable skills that you have used and developed Extra-curricular Activities & Interests • You can talk about these to show your personality and demonstrate transferable skills e.g. team-work, ability to take on responsibility, communication, etc. • Think about what to include.Is it interesting and relevant; does it add value to your overall statement? Why this University? • Showing why you have selected this route of study in this particular university/department/group crucially demonstrates motivation and enthusiasm • For postgraduate research applications in particular it is important to show that you have investigated the area in depth. Perhaps mention individual research groups, projects, particular individuals, etc. and link these in with your own research interests and activities • If applying to a university overseas you could state what you will gain and give culturally.
